Sheriff Darren Campbell stated: On Sunday, February 5, 2023 Deputy Velazquez and Deputy Zalepka were responding to a suspicious vehicle in the area of Brawley School Road, in Mooresville, when Deputy Velazquez observed a vehicle matching the description and initiated a traffic stop due to traffic violations.
A 17 year old juvenile was the driver of the vehicle and his passenger was identified as Jahlile Monroe Smith, 22 years old, both of Charlotte. During the course of their investigation the Deputies located approximately 76 dosage units of MDMA or ecstasy as well as a misdemeanor amount of marijuana and items of paraphernalia.
Smith was arrested for Felony Possession with Intent to Sell or Deliver a Schedule I Controlled Substance, Felony Maintaining a Vehicle for Controlled Substance, Misdemeanor Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Misdemeanor Possession of Schedule VI Controlled Substance. He was transported to the Iredell County Detention Center where he was brought before Magistrate Watkins and issued a 40,000.00 dollar secured bond on those charges.
Hours later Deputy Velazquez was dispatched to the same area on Brawley School Road in reference to a stolen vehicle. After gathering surveillance videos it was determined that Smith and the juvenile were the suspects in this offense as well.
Deputy Velazquez took out warrants for Smith for Two Counts of Felony Conspiracy, Felony Larceny of a Motor Vehicle, Felony Breaking and Entering of a Motor Vehicle, and Two Counts of Misdemeanor Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor. He was given an additional 25,000.00 dollar secured bond.
Juvenile Services was contacted in reference to the 17-year-old driver co-conspirator. This investigation is ongoing.
